Paper Abstract:
Use of symbolism in short stories incl. "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Masque of the Red Death," The Cask of Amontillado," & in selected poems incl. "The Raven," "Annabel Lee."

Paper Introduction:
Edgar Allan Poe shows a fascination with death, disease, and decay in his stories and poems, and he uses symbolism to represent death and dying as something that takes place not separate from life but deeply embedded within it. Poe mixes life and death in a variety of ways, so much so that he seems to show a morbid fascination with the processes of dying and with the symbolism of death. Poe's preoccupation with death and more specifically with death-in-life is seen in many of his short stories. The character of Roderick Usher in "The Fall of the House of Usher" is a man whose senses are so acute as to cause him physical pain -- a case of one who lives life is in an ultra mode that restricts his movements so much as to reduce rather than enhance life. His sister shows a different form of life-in-death, or

Paper Abstract:
Analysis of thematic structure of Poe's THE PURLOINED LETTER. Emphasizes the role of the theme of individuality. Includes outline.

Paper Introduction:
A recurring theme in American literature is the importance of the individual and of individuality. The American character is seen as unique in that the individual is able to tap inner resources allowing a singular view of the world and enabling the individual to overcome great obstacles. However, there is a duality to the image presented of what might be called the intuitive ability of the individual in fiction. Imagination is seen in some ways as empowering, as giving the individual greater capabilities than are possessed by others. At the same time, the imagination can be seen as inducing illusion so that the individual fails to see reality. These two aspects of the American imagination can be seen in the character of Auguste Dupin in Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Purloined Letter," in which the character uses imagination to achieve success.

Paper Abstract:
Examines Gothic features (mystery, terror, medieval architecture, death) in stories & poems.

Paper Introduction:
This study will provide an analysis of the Gothic features of the writing of Edgar Allan Poe. The study will argue that Poe's works do indeed demonstrate a number of the elements of what is known as the Gothic school in literature, which is marked by "mystery . . . heavily tinged with horror derived from a gloomy background of medieval architecture and with terror of the supernatural" (Columbia 529). Writing of the story "Ligeia," one critic writes that the exterior of the abbey and its situation are described with every adjective in the Gothic repertoire: wildest, least frequented, gloomy and dreary grandeur, savage aspect, melancholy and time-honored memories, utter abandonment, remote and unsocial region, verdant decay (Bloom 96).

Paper Abstract:
Examines short story's symbols of death, related to Ralph Waldo Emerson's transcendentalist world view.

Paper Introduction:
The purpose of this research is to examine symbolism in "The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allan Poe in connection with transcendentalism as articulated by Ralph Waldo Emerson. The plan of the research will be to set forth a definition of transcendentalism and then to discuss how imagery in Poe's story can be discussed in relationship to Emersonian transcendentalism. Transcendentalism is the name given to a personalist metaphysics associated with the so-called Concord School of Philosophy, which articulated a recognition in man of the capacity of knowing truth intuitively, or of attaining knowledge transcending the reach of the senses. In the transcendentalist view, there are certain laws of religion and metaphysics in the spiritual world that can be known even though not directly experienced. Because the mind makes intuitions, leaping from the mater

Paper Abstract:
Compares protagonists of horror stories as men who see themselves as immune to physical and/or psychological laws.

Paper Introduction:
This study will provide a comparative analysis of two short stories by Edgar Allan Poe---"The Masque of the Red Death" and "The Tell-Tale Heart." As the study will show, despite some important differences, the fundamental message of the author in both stories is the same. Both stories feature protagonists who believe they are somehow exempt from the physical and/or psychological laws and conditions which control the lives of others. The protagonist of "Red Death," Prince Prospero, believes that he is beyond the power of the plague. He believes that ordinary people will be killed by the plague, but that he and his friends are immune. It seems that this immunity is based on more than the fact that he has tried to physically wall out the disease. Before he takes extraordinary measures to keep the plague out, he "summoned to his presence a thousand hale and

Paper Abstract:
Amer. writer as master of romantic tales of terror & the supernatural ("Fall of House of Usher" & "Ligeia").

Paper Introduction:
The American author Edgar Allen Poe (1809-1849) was a master of the literary genre known as the Gothic story. Gothic stories are romantic tales of terror and the supernatural, which rely a great deal on scene and setting to convey a sense of horror to the reader. The Gothic story came into being in the year 1764, with the publishing of The Castle of Otranto, A Gothic Story, by the British author Horace Walpole, who "started the genre, supplied its name, and established its favorite trappings" (Kennedy 176). The crumbling castle or shadowy mansion, as well as the dark and stormy night, are typical elements of the Gothic tale. This paper will compare two short stories in the Gothic style by Edgar Allen Poe, namely "The Fall of the House of Usher," and "Ligeia," in terms of such elements as setting, characters and the idea of life after death. It will be seen

Positive & negative critical views by T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden, four others.

Paper Introduction:
Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" has long been a popular poem, and it has also been the subject of much explication and criticism, both pro and con. Some critics find the poem to be a coherent expression of deep feeling, while others quarrel with the ideas expressed by Poe, the manner in which those ideas are expressed, or both. Some of the sternest criticism both of Poe and this particular poem was written by T.S. Eliot. Eliot believes that "The Raven" is far from being Poe's best poem, and more than this he states that an "irresponsibility towards the meaning of words is not infrequent with Poe" (Eliot 32), an irresponsibility he finds in "The Raven" specifically. He cites the first appearance of the raven in the work: In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days

Paper Abstract:
Theme of death in "Masque of Red Death", "Cask of Amontillado", "The Sphinx", "The Tell-Tale Heart" & "Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar".

Paper Introduction:
Poe - The Image of Death Edgar Allen Poe presents each theme of his stories through vivid description and suspenseful plots. In a number of stories by Poe, the prevalent image with which he communicates his theme is death. Poe uses the same image of death to produce five different themes in the following five stories: "The Masque of the Red Death," "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Sphinx," "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar." "The Masque of the Red Death" presents a familiar theme with an interesting twist. The main character's situation is as follows: the "Red Death," a disease similar to the plague but more hideous to see, has devastated a country. The prince, sensing imminent danger, arranges for himself and 1,000 of his "light-hearted friends" to be sealed in the "castellated abbeys

Paper Abstract:
Analyzes poem's beauty, themes, word choices, mood, composition, symbols.

Paper Introduction:
In the confines of the 108 carefully composed lines of "The Raven," Edgar Allen Poe powerfully affects his reader. In "The Philosophy of Composition," Poe discusses the process of writing "The Raven." Reading these works gives the reader an idea of the complexity of the poem. The impact of "The Raven" is derived from Poe's careful calculation of each aspect of the poem. He leaves nothing in question, using each element, from word choice to tone, to create the poem's lasting effect. While reading the "Philosophy of Composition," the reader loses the emotion of "The Raven," but when the reader goes back to the poem, the technical insight makes the poem ultimately more effective. "While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping" (Poe, "The Raven" 1331). The feelings Poe provokes with this line are curiosity and fear. In the two lines preceding,

Paper Abstract:
Focuses on violence, terror, sadism. Death, insanity, sexual frustration, bitterness in his stories & critical/psychological interpretations.

Paper Introduction:
The Violence and Terror of Poe The stories of Edgar Allan Poe are so filled with cruelty and sadism as to suggest a psychological unbalance on the part of the author. His violent themes - a tortured prisoner in a dungeon of the Inquisition, a man plastered alive into the wall of a tomb, the brutal murder of a cat by its crazed owner, and a man viciously killed because of his vulture eye - raise questions about the author's motivation - was it literary or personal? A study of Poe's life suggests that his obsession with violence and terror was not a reflection of the current literary movement, but a reflection of his own tortured psyche. Poe was raised in an atmosphere of death and alienation. His mother died when he was three-years-old, leaving him an orphan - his father having long since disappeared. He was raised

With the death his mother in 1811, he was sent to live with wealthy foster parents., Mr. and Mrs. John Foster Allan, in Richmond, Virginia. Formalistic analysis of author's horror story. Aesthetics, style, characterization, point of view, plot, structure.

Paper Introduction:
The purpose of this research is to discuss the formalistic approach to Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" ("FHU"). The object of formalistic criticism is to discover and explain the form of Poe's short story from an examination of the text. The text will be used to discover the shape and effect of the story, as well as to discuss how they are achieved. In A Handbook of Critical Approaches to Literature the underlying rationale to the formalistic approach is discussed (Guerin 72). The background of formalistic theory can be found in classical art and aesthetics which showed a preoccupation with form. The theory of unity of Aristotle's Poetics has particular application "FHU." Poe's theories of art--an extension of Coleridge's theory that parts "mutually support and explain each other; all in their

Paper Abstract:
Discusses his use of the death of women as a major theme. Refers to poems & stories.

Paper Introduction:
Edgar Allan Poe is more popular today than when he was alive. Ironically, considering that his most successful writing is about death, his own death led to increased fame for him. As a result of films starring Vincent Price and based on Poe, wealth and recognition have resulted for others. Poe is one of the few 19th-Century American writers who is appreciated even by young people. Of course, the appreciation is through film versions of Poe's works. Although Poe was found in a gutter in Baltimore, Maryland just before he died, in death Poe has achieved success as a master of horror and doom. Poe often chose the death of a beautiful woman as his subject. He considered it to be the most poetic of all possible subjects. In Poe's essay "The Philosophy of Composition," he explains the methodical manner in which he composed "The Raven."
