Paper Abstract:
Discusses how the HIV/AIDS epidemic altered the gay community. Public perceptions toward homosexuality and fear of the disease. Politicization of AIDS by gay acitvists. Engagement in risky sexual practices by ethnic groups. Examines the effect of the AIDS crisis on severalt groups, including the leather community, the Latino population.

Paper Introduction:
The impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic has affected many sectors of society and has especially altered the gay community. Because of the epidemic, the public perceptions towards homosexuality have been transformed by the fear of the disease. In their struggle against the HIV/AIDS epidemic, mainly white gay members of the community have rallied together and politicized their presence. However, minority ethnic groups such as the African Americans and Latino continue to engage in risky sexual practices. In this paper, the effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on different groups will be described and examined. According to different polls to assess public attitudes towards the gay population during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, it appears that the public had not altered their opinions on certain issues because of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The public

Paper Abstract:
Argues against institutionalizing single-sex marriages. Discusses societal views on legally sanctioned homosexual union. Benefits and problems for single-sex partners. Civil inequality involved. Changes in marriage over the years. Need to protect traditional marriage. Denfense of current marriage laws. Dangers of widening the definition of marriage structure.

Paper Introduction:
This research provides a counterargument to advocacy of gay marriage. The research will set forth the cultural context in which the issue has arisen in recent years and then discuss reasons that prevent acceptance that institutionalizing gay marriage is either necessary to or desirable for the integrity or the benefit of American civil society. An Associated Press poll conducted in 2000 found that by a thin majority (51%), Americans are opposed to single-sex marriage; 34% are said to approve of such marriages, while 41% are said to approve of single-sex "domestic partnerships." More than 50% of the poll sample supported the rights of homosexual couples to receive insurance, Social Security, and inheritance benefits from their partners (Barillas, 2001). Numbers may not suit the strongest advocates of gay marriage, but significant segme

Defines Gay & Lesbian marriages. Discusses issues involved and arguments against & in favor of same-sex marriage. Discrimination against homosexuals. Civil marriage beneficiaries. Pressures of social conformity. Cites studies on the effects on children of same-sex marriages.

Paper Introduction:
This research examines the subject of gay and lesbian marriages. The research will set forth a working definition of the subject and then make a balanced presentation of the issue fronts involved in advocacy and opposition to it, with a view, however, toward demonstrating the basis for support for such marriages as a matter of sanctioned public policy. Background for discourse of same-sex marriage can be dated from 1969, the year of the now-famous Stonewall riot in New York City, which fostered a generation of social activism and group advocacy on the part of homosexuals. Massachusetts US Representative Barney Frank, a self-identified homosexual, has been quoted on the issue in this way: "I don't understand how it hurts anybody else if two people want to be legally . . . responsible for each other" (Pearcey & Colson, 1996, p. 104). Issues of homophobia, presumption of heterosexual identity, gender. Criticism of novel for its lesbian marginalization. Legal and literary conflict of the novel at time of its publication.

Paper Introduction:
The emergence of feminist criticism and women's studies since the 1960s has been affected in more recent decades by the related but nonetheless distinctive disciplines of gender studies and queer theory. How feminist theory links with gender studies can be seen in Sedgwick's point that, whatever else feminist efforts to enlarge the Western canon to include women's texts have done, in significant part they have been due to "the scarifying coarseness and visibility with which women and men are, in most if not all societies, distinguished . . . from one another" (Sedgwick 1483). Sedgwick cites the problems in applying the feminist canonic "model" "to that very differently structured though closely related form of oppression, modern homophobia" (1483). She identifies in much critical discourse "a possible though intensively proscribed homosexual identity in Euro-Ameri

Paper Abstract:
Impact of changing societal views about homosexuality in the U.S. Controversies that surround same-sex couples and the families they seek to create. Existing prejudices against homosexuals. The establishment of families; marriage and common-law marriage. Lack of legal protections and social acceptance for same-sex couples. Movement to establish legally-binding civil unions for same-sex couples.

Paper Introduction:
This paper is an examination of the impact of changing societal views about homosexuality and the effects of those changes on the institution of the family. While homosexuality has been a part of the human experience from the beginning, society’s attitudes toward homosexual practices and homosexual lifestyles have changed considerably. In American society, this has meant an evolution from shame and disapproval to gradual and increasing acceptance. Yet gay and lesbian marriage remains a difficult concept for most Americans to embrace, and the families that have tried to form around homosexual unions face great barriers to acceptance and legal obstacles for participants, ranging from prohibitions against partner benefits to difficulties in becoming parents and problems accepting gay and lesbian children. This paper looks at the controversies

Paper Introduction:
This research examines the portrayal of homosexuals in the mainstream mass media. The research will set forth the context in which the visibility of homosexuals in popular culture has presented issue fronts for analysis and then discuss audience response toward homosexuals as expressed by media ratings or other modes of social acceptance. In particular, the research will explore evidence that depictions of homosexual characters who are latently or potentially heterosexual are received more positively by the general public than are depictions of characters who are confirmed and unchangeable in their sexual orientation. The increased visibility of manifestly homosexual characters on television in recent years has brought to the fore the question of the impact of portrayals of members of a traditiona

Paper Abstract:
Discusses social & economic benefits to partners. Arguments for & against same-sex marriage. Legal domestic partnerships vs. traditional marriage.

Paper Introduction:
The issue to be discussed is whether or not homosexuals should be allowed to marry one another. The main reason why those in the gay community have called for the right to marry is usually not from a desire to be married as such but because of the desire for various social and economic benefits denied to gay people because they cannot marry. For some in the gay community, demands for gay marriage may in fact be a form of challenge to the "straight" community. For those who are truly serious about the issue, however, what is important is the attempt to secure for homosexual partners rights that are taken for granted by heterosexual married couples, such as the right to inheritance, to insurance benefits, for one partner to visit the other in a hospital, and so on. Society to date has deemed marriage to mean more than this and to have at least the

DANDYISM, AND THE WRITINGS OF QUENTIN CRISP The dictionary defines a “dandy” as “a man excessively and ostentatiously refined in dress and affected in manner; a fop…” Is the idea of being “ostentatiously refined: an oxymoron? Quentin Crisp was not the first to flout what the rest of society felt was Convention. There were Beaudelaire, Oscar Wilde, Rimbaud- among others. No doubt, the whole idea of dandyism and “fashion” out of the ordinary all began with Beau Brummell, who seems to have been among the most noted fashion-plates of his day. In fact, as the son of a wealthy man, his greatest “fame” came at Eton where he “was distinguished chiefly for his taste in dress which afterwards made him an autocrat of fashion.” Unlike the legendary Brummell (he was a real person, who died insane) dandyism is not being an autocrat or imposing

Paper Abstract:
Discusses emotion of shame as a major factor due to social & familial issues; psychological distress & disorders.

Paper Introduction:
It has often been argued that shame is a major factor in the emotional lives of homosexuals because of social and familial proscription of homosexuality, the prevalence of homophobic attitudes, and the tendency of homosexuals to internalize homophobia. There has also been intense speculation regarding the relationship between shame and disproportionately high levels of low self-esteem, depression, and even suicide among homosexuals. Research into the relationship between shame and the emotional lives of homosexuals and their incidence of psychological distress and disorders has only begun very recently. Yet preliminary findings confirm the importance of shame in these areas while intuitive connections between the emerging understanding of the long-neglected emotion of shame in the psychological literature and the nature of homosexuals'

GAYS IN THE MILITARY BACKGROUND: According to the Department of Defense, U.S. forces have had policies prohibiting homosexuals from serving in the military since the beginning of World War II. The policy prior to the "Don't Ask - Don't Tell" policy on homosexuality was formalized in 1982 and stated that: Homosexuality is incompatible with military service. The presence in the military environment of persons who engage in homosexual conduct or who, by their statements demonstrate a propensity to engage in homosexual conduct, seriously impairs the accomplishment of the military mission. Reviews studies on battering of Lesbians by their partners; lack of resources, incl. Shelters; societal issues.

Paper Introduction:
Domestic violence is widespread in America, and is usually thought of in terms of violence by men against women, though some women do batter men. Child abuse is also very common, and can involve violence against children of either sex by adults of either sex, even to the degree that it is not uncommon for children to be murdered by relatives. A hidden side of domestic violence is that between partners in same sex-relationships. It occurs between gay men and between lesbians. It has been estimated that more than six million women are victims of domestic violence every year in the United States, and this violence ranges from simple hassling in the street to rape and incest, to physical and psychological abuse, all of which are very destructive on the physical and mental health of a woman (Bernhard, 2000). While some woman-to-woman abuse takes place

Paper Abstract:
Critique of the movement to redefine the institution of marriage to include gay couples.

Paper Introduction:
The issue of gay marriage has emerged seemingly from nowhere in this election year as a major issue. One reason for this is the fact that the legislature in the state of Hawaii has been considering a bill that would make same-sex marriages legal, creating fears in the rest of the country that other states might be forced against their will to accept such marriages in Hawaii as legal elsewhere. Much of the argument over this issue is a discussion of definitions and the meaning of marriage as well as the meaning of legal. Legislators in Washington have to date worked to assure that if any states decide to allow same-sex marriage, other states will not have to recognize these unions in law. What they should be doing is finding a way to accommodate the needs of the millions of people seeking fairness and equity in such things as insurance and the right to hospital visitation, wheth

Paper Introduction:
The Lesbian/Gay Political Movement Introduction In thinking about this topic, it is interesting how difficult it is to even begin the discussion. What should the title be? Should it include bisexuals and transvestites in the heading? Should it be entitled the "queer" political movement? Language has been an issue during this history of this debate, and actually since the origins of the modern political movement dealing with homosexuality. Nonheterosexuals have been called by many names, mostly pejorative, including Uranians, inverts, queers, faggots, dykes, gays, and homosexuals. Argues against special federal law protecting rights of gays at work. History of gay social activism & legislation, discrimination, morality, alternatives to federal law.

Paper Introduction:
The purpose of this research is to examine the proposition that federal legislation should not protect sexual preference at the work place. The plan of the research will be to set forth the social, cultural, and political context in which the issue has assumed importance in recent years and then to discuss the basis for the view that sexual preference does not merit the status in law of special civil-rights or employment-opportunity protections. When Congress debated the 1964 Civil Rights Act, an opponent of the legislation who sought to show how absurd the idea of extending equal protection to racial minorities in the area of public accommodations inserted a provision that would extend to women the same protections that the bill afforded to blacks. The bill became law, and by means of Title IX, women as well as ethni

Paper Introduction:
This paper is a study of the current understanding about homosexuality, the state in which an individual is sexually attracted to members of his or her own gender instead of to members of the opposite sex. Estimates vary regarding the percentage of the population that can be defined as homosexual; some experts believe it may be as high as 10 percent but acknowledge that the precise number is impossible to determine since cultural and societal stigmas continue to make an openly homosexual lifestyle difficult and painful. While as recently as the early 1970s homosexuality was classified as a psychological disorder by the American Psychiatric Association, the majority of scientists now agree that sexual orientation is determined primarily by an individual's genes. However, many families, societies, organized religions, and legal systems continue to

Examines causes, theories (genetic, biological, psychobehavioral, bioenvironmental), research, hormones, sex-role socialization, family influences.

Paper Introduction:
ABSTRACT This paper examined the etiology of homosexual preference. In this regard, the paper examined genetic theories, biological theories, and psychobehavioral theories of the causes and contributors to homosexuality. It was concluded that, in general, there is insufficient evidence to support any one theoretical perspective. It was further concluded that it was likely that the most valid theoretical perspective would be one that presented a multiply-determine perspective. Introduction Over the last decade there has been a good deal of research examining for determinants and contributors to homosexual preference (See: Allgeier & Allgeier, 1994; Sue, Sue & Sue, 1994; Gonsiorek, 1990; Muehrer, 1995; Schmidt & Clement, 1995). Critical analysis of logical & ethical flaws in author's argument for right of gays to serve in military.

Paper Introduction:
Joseph Steffan, in Honor Bound: A Gay Naval Midshipman Fights to Serve His Country, argues convincingly that he and every gay man or woman has the right to serve his country in the military. There is no question that legally Steffan is correct in his argument. This reader wholeheartedly supports Steffan in his moral and legal fight to exercise that right. Any law---civilian or military---which discriminates against gays should be abolished, period. Steffan's personal commitment to that struggle wins this reader's total support. However, this piece will question the overall philosophy of the author on two counts. First, that philosophy is weak with contradictions between his plea for moral and humane treatment of gays by individuals and institutions, and the utterly immoral and inhumane nature of the profession he sought to pursue as a member of the military. That

Critical analysis of President Clinton's policy, historical military bias, right of privacy, Pentagon position.

Paper Introduction:
President Clinton addressed the issue of gays in the military as one of the first issues in his administration, and he was roundly criticized for making this his first challenge. He had originally proposed eliminating the ban on gays in the military outright. Ultimately, though, Clinton settled for what has been characterized as a "don't ask, don't tell" policy. In essence, this leaves the ban on gays in the military in force in that any gay behavior would be grounds for dismissal. The new policy means that recruits will not be asked their sexual orientation, and if they do not tell, no one will challenge them. If they are found out to be gay, however, it is unclear what the consequences would be, which is one of the problems with the new policy. Clinton's present policy is specious and only maintains the status quo that existed before he came to office, with a few

GAY RIGHTS INITIATIVES: A COMPARISON CAMPAIGNS IN COLORADO AND OREGON Introduction In November 1992, Colorado voters approved an initiative prohibiting the enactment of anti-discrimination laws covering homosexuals (Hill, 1993, pp. 26-28). The Colorado initiative has never been implemented because it has been tied up in court ever since the Colorado electorate voted to make it law. The Colorado State Supreme Court in October 1994 upheld a lower court ruling permanently enjoining the measure (Gallagher, 1994, p. 53). The significance of the success at the polls of the Colorado initiative, however, is not that the initiative has not become law. Rather, the significance of the initiative lies in the fact that its success at the polls provided encouragement to opponents in

Paper Introduction:
This paper looks at bisexuality, which is currently undergoing one of its periodic surges in interest both as an identifying label for sexual preference and as a subject for scientific investigation. Difficult to define precisely, the concept of bisexuality nevertheless exerts a fascination for what it reveals about society's changing attitudes about sex, gender, and male-female relationships. Defining bisexuality is a relatively simple exercise: it is a sexual attraction for members of both the same and the opposite sex. Defining the bisexual individual, however, is a much more difficult matter. Marjorie Garber, in her exhaustive study of the subject, Vice Versa, begins by quoting the two best-known pieces of "common wisdom": "Everyone is bisexual" and "There is no such thing as bisexuality" (1995, p. 16). The difficulty lies

Paper Abstract:
Social, legal, symbolic, religious pros & cons in U.S. & Canada.

Paper Introduction:
INTRODUCTION The issue to be discussed is whether or not homosexuals should be allowed to marry one another. There are a number of rationales that have been offered by those in the gay community as to why they should be allowed to marry, and generally the impetus has come not from a desire to be married as such but as a result of various social and economic benefits denied to gay people because they cannot marry. For some in the gay community, demands for gay marriage may in fact be a form of challenge to the "straight" community, but those who are truly serious about the issue are attempting to secure for homosexual partners such rights taken for granted by heterosexual married couples as the right to inheritance, to insurance benefits, for one partner to visit the other in a hospital, and so on. Society has so far

Paper Abstract:
Legal, social & ethical analysis of gay parenting, adoption, same-sex marriage.

Paper Introduction:
THE GAY FAMILY: PARENTING, ADOPTION AND SAME SEX MARRIAGE Over the past quarter century, gay rights have come to the forefront of the American political arena. Gays have continually and adamantly sought equal treatment before the law in all areas of public and private life. Two of the more visible conflicts that have recently occurred as a result of this struggle include the furor that erupted after President Clinton announced his intention to lift the ban on gays in the Armed Forces and the rancorous debate regarding New York City’s decision to include pro-gay reading material in its elementary school system. One particular area of gay rights that has caused increasing conflict recently is the issue of gay parenting, specifically gay marriage and adoption. As the right of heterosexuals to marry has been continually recognized by the state as inalienable, gays are seek

Paper Abstract:
Examines effectiveness of autobiographical approach to gay author's life & fight for his rights.

Paper Introduction:
Joseph Steffan, in his Honor Bound: A Gay Naval Midshipman Fights to Serve His Country, presents his argument---for gays' right to serve in the military---in the form of autobiography. This form is far more effective than a traditional argumentative presentation would have been, primarily because of the nature of the issue and the specific position taken by the opponents of gays' right to serve. The issue of gays in the military is not an issue about public policy which involves merely rational discourse. To the contrary, it is a highly emotional issue in which opponents of gays in the military react from a place of hatred and, especially, fear. Gays have been demonized by forces opposed to their serving, and those forces are not about to respond to a traditional

Evolution of medical & psychiatric definition to & from status of mental disorder.

Paper Introduction:
HOMOSEXUALITY: THE TRANSITION TO AND FROM THE STATUS OF MENTAL DISORDER This research traces the transition of homosexual behavior to and from the status of mental disorder. To a certain extent, even the definition of homosexual behavior can become charged with emotional controversy. The word “homosexuality” is derived from the Greek word meaning “same,” and “generically refers to any sexual activity between members of the same sex” (Gadpaille, 1989, p. 1086). Homosexuality “as a clinical or diagnostic term is misleading, however; it implies a unity of behavior and meaning that does not exist” (Gadpaille, 1989, p. 1086). Adult preferential homosexuals “are distinguished simply by the conscious awareness of greater or exclusive sexual arousal by persons of the same sex. They need not be sex

Paper Abstract:
History, delay in community reaction, ACT UP, Gay Men's Health Crisis, ideologies & strategies, leadership, dissension, fundraising, role of entertainment industry.

Paper Introduction:
By the start of the 1990s, 200,000 Americans had already succumbed to the AIDS virus, and at least one million more are probably infected today. Unless a spectacular breakthrough comes soon, most of these people will be dead before the new millennium. This is the setting for the continuing battle against AIDS, a battle which has been going on for at least ten years now. Gay activist organizations, which had been little more than parade planning committees and social groups in the 1970s, became voices of rage and civil disobedience in the 1980s and 1990s. Less radical AIDS organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign Fund (HRCF) and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGTLF) continued to work behind the scenes. Fund raising groups in the private sector, such as the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR) and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), were sponsored heavily by celebrities, including Elizabeth Taylor. Initially, however, there were two AIDS activist organizations responding to the crisis.

Paper Abstract:
Compares novels' young gay protagonists, their growth, the realism of their experiences & the roles their lovers play.

Paper Introduction:
This study will compare and contrast the young protagonists in Neil Bartlett's Ready to Catch Him Should He Fall and Edmund White's A Boy's Own Story. The study will consider the growth of the two characters, the realism of their experiences, and the roles their lovers play in their growth. The process of growth portrayed in White's book is far more sophisticated, profound and realistic than that portrayed in Bartlett's book. This is due to the greater sophistication of the writing in White, to the fact that the protagonist in White is himself a more profound thinker and observer of psychological and emotional states and details, and because in White we are allowed to see more of the internal workings of the protagonist through the first-person perspective. Bartlett's story is by far the more romantic of the two stories. To fairly assess the two

Paper Abstract:
Examines 1993 study indicating biological basis of sexual orientation. Scientific & social implications.

Paper Introduction:
The question of how much of sexual orientation is determined by a person's genes, and how much by familial and cultural influences has been a topic of debate for some time. Recently, several studies of twins and adoptive siblings have pointed toward a large genetic component in homosexuality, implying that a gene or genes should exist that create a predisposition for homosexuality--but there was no direct proof. Now, a team of geneticists at the National Cancer Institute has come closer to that proof (Pool, 1993, p. 291). Scientists Dean Hamer and his colleagues Stella Hu, victoria Magnuson, Nan Hu, and Angela Pattatucci have reported that some instances of male homosexuality to a small stretch of DNA on the X chromosome. If the finding can be confirmed, it might eventually lead to a better understanding of the biological basis
