Paper Abstract: Contends that the assassination of President John F. Kennedy shifted the U.S. from a period of hope to a period of paranoia and conspiracy theories. Idea of conspiracies as a staple of popular fiction, film, TV. Analysis of Oliver Stone's 1991 film JFK. The 1997 film CONSPIRACY THEORY. Perpetuation on the Internet.
Paper Introduction: John Fitzgerald Kennedy was President of the United States for less than three years, yet in that time he had a major impact on the country and on foreign and domestic policy lasting for a decade or more. Some of his actions produced effects that were beneficial, and others can be seen now as less effective, notably his enmeshing the country in the Vietnam War. Kennedy's presidency began in a spirit of glamour and change and ended in the assassination of an American president. The country shifted from a period of hope to a period of tension, paranoia, conspiracy theories, and a growing distrust of government. In some degree, none of these things was new, but the Cold War era increased world tensions and made Americans less trustful both of other nations and of other Americans. The era of conspiracy theories really begins with the Kennedy assassination, an event

Paper Introduction: Effects of World War II on the U.S.
As World War II broke out in Europe, the United States was, for the most part, determined upon maintaining its neutrality
and the isolationist policy that had become a national
characteristic in the wake of World War I and the Great
Depression (Johnson, 1997). Even while providing some financial
and material support to Great Britain via the Lend-Lease
Program, the U.S. in general and the Roosevelt Administration in
particular remained somewhat removed from "Europe's War" -
until, of course, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December
7, 1941. After the attack, the United States moved rapidly to
amass a large military machine and to provide that machine with
all of the resources that were needed to wage war on two
disparate fronts. AS Paul Johnson (2000, p. 779) has commented,

Sentimental & historical meaning of the Confederate flag to Southerners. Issues of symbolism, partriotism, racism, slavery. South vs. North. Views of whites & African-Americans in South Carolina. Argues that the Confederate flag should remain. Gives reasons.
Paper Introduction: “To strike freedom of the mind with the fist of patriotism is an old and ugly subtlety,” wrote Adlai Stevenson in a 1952 speech, and his words could well apply to the debate that has gone on for generations in the state of Georgia over the flying of the state’s flag, which since 1956 has had the Confederate emblem incorporated into it. Although recent protests over the Georgia flag have not been as those in South Carolina over the Confederate Battle Flag’s flying over the statehouse in Columbia – a somewhat more egregious action – it remains a contentious issue in the state that is considers itself both to be the heart of Dixie and also the heart of the new, enlightened, progressive South (Harrison A1).

Paper Introduction: An Experiment in Freedom: The United States, 1865-1915
Introduction
Perhaps the most significant phrase in the president's address is the statement that America is "meant to be an endless experiment in freedom." America began its history as a colony as a place where people sought freedom from persecution. And it fought the American Revolution because it sought to rule itself based on democratic ideals. However, when the Founders drafted the Constitution in 1789, thereby creating the United States of America, many residents still were not granted the rights of individual freedom originally conceived only for white males. Consequently, the history of the United States from the period following the Civil War until 1915 was largely a continuing history of the development of the United States Constitution and a consta

Herbert Hoover as Secretary of Commerce, 1921-29
Introduction
Herbert Hoover is remembered today primarily as the hapless predecessor of Franklin D. Roosevelt: the President who, at the time of the Great Crash of 1929 and the beginning ensuing Great Depression, failed to respond either with effective economic policies or dynamic leadership, and was accordingly swept aside in the 1932 election. His unsuccessful presidency in a time of crisis has almost completely overshadowed his prior career.

Paper Abstract: Discusses internment in context of U.S. history of prejudice & discrimination.
Paper Introduction: Roger Daniels, in Prisoners Without Trials: Japanese Americans in World War II, makes clear that the internment of Japanese-Americans was not simply a fluke that was justifiable during wartime. To the contrary, that internment was part and parcel of both the long American history of prejudice and discrimination against minorities in general (Native Americans, African Americans, Mexican Americans, etc.) and especially against Asian Americans.
The argument that the interment was justified because Japanese Americans posed a threat to the security of the United States ignores the fact that Italian Americans and German Americans were not rounded up and placed in internment camps. This was true despite the fact that Germany and Italy were enemies in World War II along with Japan. The racism of the

Paper Abstract: Discussion of how Johnson's plan for reconstruction was very different from what Lincoln had envisioned. Deals with this in terms of: political reconstruction; economics and labor; and religion and society.
Paper Introduction: THE END OF THE CIVIL WAR AND THE RECONSTRUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Lincoln's plan of reconstruction was designed to restore the Southern states to the Union with maximum speed and a minimum of Federal intervention. The great majority of white southerners would receive amnesty and full power to reestablish loyal state government. In contrast, Andrew Johnson romanticized the self-sufficient farmer, and seemed to dream of an agrarian utopia free of the influence of the rich planter aristocracy. But he also viewed the future economic role of blacks as no more than that of an unskilled agricultural worker. Johnson's agrarian vision was never realized and the old southern aristocracy which he originally criticized, gradually regained much of its former influence

Paper Abstract: Examination of Andrew Johnson's role in Reconstruction following the Civil War.
Paper Introduction: Andrew Johnson and Reconstruction
Introduction
Because we live in the modern era, few of us ever consider the complexities of governing a young, raucous United States. In the years following the end of the Civil War, the baton of power and responsibility was passed Constitutionally from President Lincoln to then Vice-President Johnson. When the 40th Congress did not agree with President Johnson's policies, they attempted to take that power from him.
As a southerner in a northern administration, Johnson was already an anomaly. In some sense, his political sensibilities were the perfect solution for a country trying to become whole again (Benedict, 1973, 366-367). In his efforts to restart Reconstruction, Johnson combined southern and northern political

Paper Abstract: Looks at the activities, sentiments, & trends of the Ku Klux Klan in Oregon during the 1920s.
Paper Introduction: The KKK in Oregon in the 1920s
Introduction
One of the reasons that it is interesting to study the second wave of Klan expansion, which occurred during the 1920s, is that there seems to be another resurgence of the Klan, or Klanlike organizations during the 1990s. There is an increase of antiimmigrant sentiment, an emphasis on traditional values, and an increase in white supremacy.
Even in the state of Oregon, which has been progressive and liberal on a number of issues, there are enclaves of survivalists, militia members, and neoNazis in both rural areas and smaller cities. It might be instructive to look at the past in order to gain some perspective on the present situation.

AMERICAN VIETNAM POLICY DURING THE EISENHOWER ADMINISTRATION
This research paper traces the evolution of United States policy toward Vietnam during the administration of President
Dwight Eisenhower (January 1953-January 1961) and discusses the
factors which shaped that policy and contributed to its ultimate failure. The focus of this paper is on the mind-set and operating assumptions of President Eisenhower and other key members of his national security team and their manifestation in Vietnam policy. Its theses are that:
(1) from the late 1940s and throughout the Eisenhower administration, American policy toward Indochina/Vietnam was strongly shaped by Cold War tensions and was dictated primarily by Cold War considerations --i.e. the imperative need as

Paper Abstract: Aims, effects & obstacles of post-Civil war efforts to rebuild economy & society of defeated Southern states.
Paper Introduction: The period of Reconstruction is the era following the Civil War when the country set out to rebuild and to revive the economy of the devastated South. as the war ended, Lincoln faced the question of what to do with the states of the defeated Confederacy, an issue that elicited sharp disagreement among Northerners. Some felt that these states should make voters as well as freedmen of their slaves, and Lincoln said the important thing was to get these states back in their proper place in the Union. Lincoln was assassinated before he could do anything at all about the states of the Old South. Andrew Johnson, his successor, gave assurances that he would carry on with Lincoln's Reconstruction program, though he also gave the impression that he would deal more harshly than Lincoln would have with rebel leaders. The murder of Lincoln only added to that attitude.

Paper Abstract: Examines causes of 1898 conflict between Spain & U.S.
Paper Introduction: WHAT WERE THE CAUSES OF THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR?
The Spanish-American War was basically a movement designed to test the Imperialist powers of Europe and the effect those powers would have if they tried to claim authority over nations on the North and South American continents. History books record the 1898 conflict as a war between Spain and the United States which was caused by demands from Cuban patriots who wanted to be independent from Spanish rule. In fact, there were many reasons the all acted together to create the conflict (Omicinski, 1998, ARC).
The United States had just 30 some years before undergone the Civil War and a painful reconstruction and was trying to unify itself as a nation. In the meantime, Spain, whose naval

Paper Abstract: Describes & compares social reforms of Progessive Era (1900-1917), and of Presidents Franklin Roosevelt in 1930s & Lyndon Johnson in 1960s in civil rights & economics.
Paper Introduction: PROGRESSIVE NEW DEAL AND GREAT SOCIETY ERA REFORMS
This research paper compares and contrasts the approaches taken by reformers to civil rights and social welfare or income maintenance programs during the eras of the Progressives, the New Deal and the Great Society. The idea of using the power of government to benefit broader segments of society originated in the Progressive era; however, Progressivism was largely a middle class movement which did little to advance the interests of nonwhite groups or the poor. It did espouse the political equality of women. New Deal reformers established for the first time a social safety net of minimum subsistence standards. They viewed their role more as one of extending temporary relief than of permanently addressing the needs of the poor. The civil rights record of the New Deal was poor; but blacks and other minorities

Paper Abstract: Overview of major events which led, to increased peace & social justice: Progressivism, WW I & II, Depression.
Paper Introduction: The Twentieth Century began with what is called the progressive era, and in many ways the underlying trend toward reform and positive change has continued to be the hallmark of the century. This was also a century which featured two worldwide wars and many smaller conflicts, a Cold War that could have led to an even more terrible conflict, and many social tensions, yet overall the trend has been toward increased peace and world harmony.
Progressivism was shaped around core ideas: 1) a commitment to social justice; and 2) a search for order and for the restoration of the social order. The goals of the Progressive movement involved specific needs in society at the time, needs brought about by a long period of neglect during the time when the country was becoming industrialized and urbanized: 1) housing

Paper Abstract: Goals, successes & failures of policy on freed slaves, federal vs. state powers, North-South relations, politics, economics, ex-slaves' voting rights.
Paper Introduction: Southern Reconstruction government was a social, political, and economic experiment that largely failed. For most practical purposes slavery ended with the war, yet emancipation raised new problems that were fully as great. The "Negro Question" centered on the treatment of the AfricanAmerican freedman. Were blacks to be fullfledged citizens with rights and privileges equal to those of any other citizen, or a dependent element in the population, free but not equal? The question had to be answered in some fashion as part of the postCivil War peace settlement. Through reconstruction, the North tried to remake the South in its own image.
Besides the "Negro Question," a related question faced by the North was what to do with the South and its white population. In essence, the South was captured territory, but most North

Paper Abstract: Social, economic & political aspects, origins, ideology, leadership, platform & effects of late 19th/early 20th Cent. reform movement.
Paper Introduction: This research will examine the period of American history known as the Progressive Era. The research will set forth the social and political context in which Progressivism emerged and discuss what individuals and groups were identified with the phenomenon and why, what the trend achieved, and its significance as an outgrowth of previous movements in American culture and as a precursor of events and actions that followed.
Many of the features of American life that gave rise to the age of industry and enterprise known as the Gilded Age also fostered the development of a period in which society, politics, and culture converged so as to give to the last quarter of the nineteenth century and the years before the onset of World War I the term Progressive Era. Paper Introduction: AMERICAN ENTRY INTO WORLD WAR I AND ITS DOMESTIC EFFECTS
This research paper deals with the reasons which led the United States to enter World War I on the side of the Western Allies in April, 1917 and the domestic consequences of that decision. American public opinion shifted from nearly unanimous support for American neutrality at the outbreak of war in August 1914 to overwhelming approval of the declaration of war against Germany in April 1917. No one factor fully explains this shift in sentiment nor the American decision-making process involved. Economic factors (the influence of American war loans and supplies of munitions to the Allies) and ideological considerations played their part but were not decisive. The casus belli was Germany's decision of January 1917 to resume unrestricted submarine warfare against neutral shipping. The

The inevitability of an American empire seem obvious to all (at least among the elite members of society), including one Englishman who wrote, “Westward the Sun of Empire takes its way. Time’s noblest offspring is the last” (Mead 11). The U.S. rationalized that expansion in a peculiarly American way, referring to religion and claiming it was the nation’s “Manifest Destiny.” This paper will analyze Manifest Destiny and America’s other justifications for its 19th century imperialism and quasi-imperialism.
The U.S. emerged from an empire during the age of empires, so it was natural that the new nation would quickly join in the competition. The U.S., though, faced a dilemma. The founders

Paper Abstract: Examines history of relations from 1788 to 1998, focusing on arguments that annexation by U.S. was illegal.
Paper Introduction: The American Century, as the twentieth century has become known, actually began in 1898 when the United States acquired its first overseas possessions. The spoils of the Spanish-American War included the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. In 1998, the 100th anniversary of that four-month conflict has prompted many to re-examine America’s foray into colonialism, often with less than flattering conclusions.
What has gone unnoticed by most, however, is that 1998 also marks the 100th anniversary of the United States’ “peaceful” annexation of the Hawaiian islands. Most Americans are blissfully ignorant of how Hawaii came to be a part of the United States, and even if made aware, would likely view the American actions in the 1890s as a footnote on the road to Hawaiian statehood. No different, for example, than the annexation of

Paper Abstract: Critical review of book on New York's immigrant garment capitalists.
Paper Introduction: Roger D. Waldinger, in Through the Eye of the Needle, writes that although immigrants in general have been denied access to higher economic advancement in the United States, there have been and are exceptions to that rule. His focus is on one such exceptional group:
This book is a study of New York's latest immigrant garment capitalists, the business they have founded, and the industrial environment in which they have grown up. The garment industry is the paradigmatic case of immigrant enterprise (Waldinger 3).
Waldinger explores these enterprises in order not only to discover their nature, but also to explore why they seem to thrive as small businesses in a business era in which bigger is better, in which conglomerates rule, and in which such small

Paper Abstract: Analyzes sociologist Ira Berlin's theory that blacks freed before the Civil War formed a caste distinct from whites & black slaves, with political & socioeconomic subcastes in North & South.
Paper Introduction: This essay investigates Ira Berlin’s thesis (1974, 1976) that free Negroes in the antebellum United States formed a caste distinct from free whites and black slaves, and that this caste contained three distinct regional subcastes, in the North, the Upper South, and the Lower South. The investigation, using more recent and more detailed historiography, will consider whether Berlin’s categories remain viable, whether they need to be replaced in toto, or whether they need merely further elaboration, and, if so, what sorts of elaboration will be needed.
The general perspective arrived at here is that Berlin’s categories need detailed elaboration within each of his three major regions. Freed African-Americans formed local communities and unique personal identities that cannot be forced into Berli

Paper Abstract: Examines history of agricultural movement founded after Civil War. Origins, economics, politics, leadership, purpose, philosophy, court cases, decline.
Paper Introduction: The Granger Movement
The Granger Movement was a popular uprising among the American agricultral communities in the years following the Civil War. It was an organization modeled after the Masonic Lodge, offering farmers a chance to organize against monopolies and build up unity among themselves.
Of the many recurrent elements of world history, agrarian discontent has been one of the most pervasive and has had a broad effect on the destinies of numerous political empires. Two such examples are the English Peasants’ Revolt in 1381 and the Peasants’ War in Germany in 1524-25. These revolts stemmed from a belief of the rural citizenry that they were being economically exploited by the ruling classes. The citizens did not necessarily believe that they were impoverished, only that they were being exploited. In the case

Paper Abstract: Background, sociopolitical conditions & moral & legal argument against putting Japanese in camps in U.S. as threat to security.
Paper Introduction: During World War II, the United States interned Japanese residents of the Western states in internment camps such as that at Manzanar in California. The reason was indicated in Executive Order 9066, signed in 1942 by President Roosevelt to give authority to the War Department to define military areas in the western states and to exclude anyone who might be seen as threatening the war effort (Houston and Houston xi-xii). Japanese living in the Western states were seen as potential subversives and were summarily removed to camps to prevent this. The camps operated until after the surrender of Japan, though the U.S. Supreme Court ruled at the end of 1944 that loyal citizens could not be held in detention camps against their will (Houston and Houston, 1973, xii). The United States was wrong to place any Japanese who had not committed any offense into these

Paper Abstract: Conflicting views on what nation(s) and/or event(s) brought on war, focusing on Germany & crisis of July, 1914.
Paper Introduction: This research discusses the outbreak of World War I. The focus is on determining who was responsible for the outbreak. The determination is controversial. The Great War is a difficult war to classify because of the many forces that went into its inception and because the war itself solved no problems and so cannot be judged in terms of clearly defined issues and resolutions.
As Holger Herwig notes, the end of World War I produced the tensions and environment that would lead to World War II:
By placing the blame for the war on Germany and its allies, and by stipulating that they were to pay for the damages incurred by all combatants, the victorious Allied and Associated Powers crippled the Weimar Republic from birth and provided Adolf Hitler and his

Paper Abstract: Causes; human, economic & ecological effects of major droughts & windstorms in Amer. South; focusing on Oklahoma in 1930s.
Paper Introduction: The primary period is 1970 to 1980 for this discussion of the significance of the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall is 13 feet high and 28 miles long. It cuts the historic city of Berlin in half. More than a barrier made of concrete and barbed wire, it is a powerful symbol of the Cold War tensions that divided East and West (Smolowe, 1986, p. 32).
In his book, The Berlin Wall, Peter Galante described Sunday, August 13, 1961 in a uniquely personal way:
It was like splitting Manhattan down the middle of Fifth Avenue from the Battery to the Bronx; like splitting London with a zigzag line from Barnet to Croydon. . . . If you lived on one side and your office was on the other, you couldn’t go to work. . . . If your mother lived on one side and you lived on the
