Paper Abstract:
Case study analysis comparing & contrasting the advertising approaches of two cat foods, FELIX & WHISKAS. Reviews the world-wide cat food market, discusses impact of advertising.

Paper Introduction:
Overview of World-Wide Cat Food Market The pet food industry has grown significantly over the past 40 years in both Europe and the United Sales. There are an estimated 31.7 million cat owners in the U.S. with cat food sales totalling close to $3.4 billion. However this market is also becoming more competitive. In the U.S. cat ownership is not growing as fast as it once was and in both Europe and the U.S. consolidation of pet food producers is taking place. In addition, both areas of the world have seen a growing diversity of outlets for cat food products. In Europe, and particularly Britain, supermarket sales still account for a significant proportion of cat food sales but, as in the U.S., mass merchandisers and pet store chains offer strong competition. Furthermore in both Europe and the U.S. grocery chains have been

Paper Introduction:
Introduction Companies which cannot operate at a profit eventually go out of business. Companies which cannot generate high levels of service quality eventually cannot operate profitably; either competition will arise to take away customers, or customers will be unwilling to pay for unacceptable levels of service. Deregulation, once touted as the solution to perceived poor levels of service in the airline industry, has not brought about improved levels of service across the board. As the European airline market prepares for deregulation, it is an opportune time to examine how airlines (and airline customers) define service quality, what makes quality unique in the airline industry, and how one airline in particular, Southwest, has triumphed when others are struggling. The future of service within the airline industry is also considere

Challenges & responses since the 1970s, focusing on General Motors. Labor relations, competition with Japan, capital expenses, job structures. Chart. Table.

Paper Introduction:
For over a generation, General Motors Corporation (GM) was the largest American business enterprise, and nearly a symbol of the American industrial economy. Yet, by the 1980s, the company was near to collapse. The immediate cause of GM's difficulties was competition from Japanese imports, but the more fundamental cause was arguably GM's difficulty in making the most efficient use of capital and labor. Thus, the experience of GM in deploying its capital and labor is a useful illustration of some fundamental issues facing all firms in a competitive environment. The following pages will examine the challenges facing GM since the 1970s, and its response to those challenges. Automobile manufacture is the capital-intensive, assembly-line industrial process par excellence. The story of Henry Ford and the assembly line is a familiar piece of folklore. The

Competition, consumer behavior, products, diversification strategies, marketing implications for doing business in Japan.

Paper Introduction:
Introduction With its strong economy, Japan has long been an attractive market for international companies, but most have found entrance difficult. Aside from formal trade restrictions, the business environment in Japan includes long-standing relationships and interrelationships which can be difficult for foreign companies to understand and even more difficult for them to exploit. Nonetheless, Japanese consumers are delighted with American goods and American style, and so some Western goods have found popularity in Japan that continues to encourage other manufacturers. Disney is one example of an American company whose product (Tokyo Disneyland) has successfully been adopted by Japanese consumers; soft drinks are another area in which American companies in general, and Coca-Cola in particular, have found success. From the first decade of the twentieth century until the 1960s, the competition in the beverage industry was primarily between equals; Coca Cola fought it out with Pepsi Cola for market share, and juice or coffee companies competed with each other. In the 1960s, the competitive edge in the beverage industry went to Coca Cola, with its purchase of Minute Maid in 1960, the introduction of Sprite in 1961, and the introduction of Tab in 1963 (Hoover's, 1995). But bicycles are also used by many individuals as a form of exercise, as a way of touring, and by children as their only means of transportation. Paper Introduction:
Introduction Cellular phone service has generally been associated with highincome consumers and high-technology professionals who have a need to be in touch while on the road. As with traditional phone service, bills are based on the amount of usage (called airtime) associated with a given account; since cellular phone service is billed in this manner, companies have been careful to issue accounts only to consumers that they consider credit worthy. Because of this, consumers who have filed bankruptcy or who do not have strong credit histories are often denied cellular phone service. Recent developments in technology have, however, increased the amount of flexibility that companies have in issuing accounts, and there is now a move toward using so-called debit cards in the cellular service market. This research examines the reasoning beh

Paper Introduction:
Introduction In October 2001, Sony Electronics and Ericsson entered into a joint venture agreement in order to capitalize on Sony's consumerorientation and Ericsson's wireless market presence. The joint venture was formed to market cellular phones on a global basis, and to provide access to content that will make the phones more attractive to consumers. Similar joint ventures (including one between Sony and Qualcomm) have faced difficulties as the companies are unable to merge the corporate cultures successfully in order to form a successful third entity. External forces can also threaten strategic alliances, and alliances that operate in highly competitive markets, or highly volatile markets, are particularly vulnerable. As technology grows more complex, it also brings these widely diverse entrance points closer together, with the result that phone companies are now venturing into cable television ventures, and cable television companies are interested in providing interactive entertainment and educational opportunities. They invented the personal computer (PC) and did much to standardize not only the hardware architecture but software architectures as well. However, all has not been that well for a long time for this struggling giant. In October of 1992, IBM stunned Wall Street with its earnings third quarter earnings report. They were, to say the least, disappointing. IBM's PC business unit was singled out as a "significant earnings drag!" The company blamed its PC unit for two-thirds of a six percentage point drop in its overall gross margins (Arnst, 1992). Product analysis (material, quality, types), inspection, function, effectiveness, lubricants.

Paper Introduction:
The Condom Industry The history of condoms goes back four centuries to when physicians first fashioned condoms out of sheep-gut (Approval, 1992). While animal skin condoms are still commercially available today, their use has largely been displaced by products made of latex (Condoms, 1990, p. 18). Originally, the condom was designed for birth control (Willis, 1990, p. 32). More recently, however, the medical device is being used to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STD) (p. 32). Of course, the only sure ways to avoid these diseases are either to not have sex at all or to limit sex to one uninfected partner who is also monogamous (Baulieu et al., 1993, p. 101). Short of this though, condoms--while not 100% effective--may reduce the risk of STDs if properly used (Willis, 1990, p. 32). This fact, coupled with the fear of

THE COSMETICS INDUSTRY: AN ANALYSIS The cosmetics industry in the United States produces and markets both cosmetics and toiletries (Royce, 1991). The major players in the industry are Alberto Culver, Avon, Chesebrough Ponds, Faberge, Gillette, International Flavors and Fragrances, Noxell, and Revlon, although not all of these firms are independent entities (Standard & Poor's, 1990). Industry Description and Structure The history of the cosmetics industry can likely be traced to some of the very earliest days of civilization. It was in the lasthalf of the nineteenth century, however, when toiletries and cosmetics began to be produced and marketed on a mass scale, as opposed to being concocted in essentially local establishments.
