Paper Abstract:
Life, career, major works of Scottish documentary filmmaker.

Paper Introduction:
John Grierson (1898-1972) made very few films but was one of the most influential figures in the history of documentary filmmaking. As the leader of governmental film units in Britain and the founder of the National Film Board of Canada Grierson's belief in the potential social impact of documentary films set the course for documentary themes in English-language films. His other major innovations were the decision to rely on institutional backing, governmental or private sector, rather than depend on box-office returns and to employ "nontheatrical distribution and exhibition" (Ellis 398). Although Grierson himself abandoned directing early on, his Drifters (1929), the remarkable beginning of the documentary movement in England, remains a vital and interesting piece of work even today and, while showing how well Grierson fulfilled his mission, raises

Paper Abstract:
Analyzes his films as unique detective/mystery stories. Plots, themes, characters.

Paper Introduction:
The detective/mystery film has a number of different features which identify it while at the same time it consists of several different sub-genres representing variations in the basic generic structure. Many of the films of Alfred Hitchcock can be and have been identified as mysteries, though they are not usually mysteries in the sense of the "whodunit" or the strict detective film. Instead, they are films about crime, using the psychological underpinnings of crime as keys for delving into the realm of suspense. Mysteries use suspense as well as the viewer waits to see who committed the crime. The detective story is one of the staples of the Hollywood film, though in different periods the detective story has taken different forms according to public tastes. For much of the thirties and forties, the detective in the mold of Sherlock Holmes--the consulting

Paper Introduction:
ALFRED HITCHCOCK- WRITER Movie buffs know Alfred Hitchcock, of course, mostly for his American films- “Rebecca”, “North by Northwest”, ”The Birds”, “Marnie”, “Vertigo”, and “The Man Who Knew Too Much” (among others). But, what really sets Hitchcock apart - beginning with his earliest films done in England prior to World War II, is the fact that he was as much a writer as a director, even if the screenplay was actually “written” by someone else. “Although one aspect of Alfred Hitchcock's rhetoric drastically privileged the image over the word, he also insisted that it was during the screenwriting that his most serious work was done. He defined the screenwriting process as the space where all fundamental directorial decisions have already been made; he did not think of "writing" apart from the work he planned for the camer

Paper Abstract:
Life & work of film comedian/director. Comparison of his comedy with Chaplin; his methods as filmmaker; reputation.

Paper Introduction:
Buster Keaton was one of the two great film comedians and comedy film directors of the silent era. His reputation has suffered by the greater accord given to the other silent film comic, Charlie Chaplin, and Chaplin's reputation remained greater because Chaplin continued to work as a leading player well into the 1950s and also remained a controversial figure at the same time. Keaton, on the other hand, was considered finished by Hollywood when sound came in, though he did continue to make films until the end of his life, more often as a supporting player than a star in later years. A myth developed that Keaton could not make the transition from silent to sound because of his voice or for some similar reason, but in fact, Keaton's problems derived first from an unhappy experience at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer at the end of the silent era and second from

Paper Abstract:
Career & philosophy of Japanese humanistic filmmaker.

Paper Introduction:
Akira Kurosawa is widely considered not only one of the greatest Japanese directors, but one of the best in the world. In addition to his masterpieces, such as Seven Samurai, he has consistently shown his creative talents in his nearly 30 films. However, some of his films are clearly worse than others, and he has had some failures. As with all director's work, there are obvious reasons for this. He improved his filmmaking talents as he gained more experience, and of course sometimes he chose better material or more filmic subjects. Moreover, with Kurosawa, another factor at work here, his humanist political beliefs, damaged his ability to make quality films at times. Kurosawa has been described by some writers as being apolitical, and he seems comfortable with that definition. He certainly has distanced himself from the Marxist camp, in

Paper Abstract:
Life & career of martial arts film actor & son of Bruce Lee, focusing on his death filming [The Crow].

Paper Introduction:
The untimely death of actor Brandon Lee would have been a major story under any circumstances--the death of an actor by accidental shooting during the filming of a movie is both rare and shocking and so would attract a good deal of attention. However, the death of Brandon Lee at the age of 28 created more of a stir than might otherwise have been the case because of his family history, with the sudden death of his father, Bruce Lee, when the latter had achieved international stardom at the age of 32, and because of the nature of the film he was shooting, a film about a hero who returns from the dead. The story was thus played up as if there were a curse on the Lee family and as if aspects of the movie being made had come to life, with the movie also being made out to have been unlucky from the beginning. Brandon Lee was eight years old when his father died, and he

Paper Abstract:
Themes, characters, style of blacklisted director of [Time Without Pity], [The Servant].

Paper Introduction:
Time Without Pity (1957) is an example of Joseph Losey's work as a director from the transition period between his American films and his later, more European work. At the time, Losey was rebuilding his career as a director after fleeing from his homeland after being blacklisted for his Communist leanings of an earlier era. Losey showed a number of interests throughout his career, many of which are reflected in this British crime drama--a strong social consciousness, a sense of the plight of the individual when faced with the institutions of society, a search for justice in world that often denies it, and a strong sense of the ambiguities of reality. Losey does not see the world in black and white terms but in terms of complexities, and his characters show ambiguities in their personalities that indicate the degree to which we are all

Paper Abstract:
Examines career, style, influences, major works of innovative French filmmaker of New Wave generation..

Paper Introduction:
Louis Malle was one of the leading film directors in France when he died in 1995 after a 40-year career. Malle was one of the young directors in the 1950s who came to be seen as representing a new force in filmmaking, under the name nouvelle vague or New Wave. Malle made films not only in France but in America, fitting as easily into the mold of American independent filmmaker as he did into that of French auteur. He made a variety of types of film, and in some ways this may have made him seem more a chameleon than the more personal style of director like Truffaut. However, Malle's body of work shows a strong intelligence, a concern for human beings, the ability to elicit strong performances, and a sensible if not overtly expressive use of the camera. Malle achieved a high status in each decade of his career, rising to the fore with his first film, L'Ascenseur
