Gray proposes that the real problemsassociated with Jackson are those related to Jackson's role as a "bigdaddy" (analogous to the underboss of a slave plantation), appeasing thepowerful, predominantly white, upper-class at the expense of lower-incomepeople of color (214). Mann citesBradley's support of the MTA Red Line, a subway project that sapped much-needed funds from the overburdened L.A. Economic issues that blacks contend with today thatmay not be adequately addressed by current civil rights organizationsinclude a low minimum wage, lack of health insurance, and a lack ofchildcare options. Gray says that, rather than becoming a has-been, the Reverend JesseJackson is now an "insider" (213). Mann and Gray Mann proposes that former Los Angeles mayor Tom Bradley's liberalsupporters felt betrayed by his business-friendly solutions to urbanproblems that were often not in the best interest of the poorest residents. While Mann gives Bradley credit for improving Los Angeles, he says that theurban poor, especially poor people of color, were left behind. It may be that the middle-class people whohead civil rights organizations do not understand how relevant these issuesare to the people they're fighting for, because they may never have livedthe lifestyles of these people. bus system (2 6). Mann implies thatBradley catered to upper-class business people who did not necessarily havea vested interest in raising the standard of living for the low-incomeresidents of L.A. These issues may be ignored because they are thought tobe more general than what the civil rights movement is fighting for-"equality" for people of color. In the end, Mann argues, it is the poorest people who arenow left to deal with the fallout from Bradley's corporate-friendlypolicies that were meant to raise the standard of living for low-incomepeople but failed to achieve this.
