Podnar, Ivana; Hauswirth, Manfred; Jazayeri, Mehdi. A GIS would be valuable for chronicling the area's tourist sites and their locations and features. Without these features, the site's popularity would wane because the vast number of exhibits in the site would make it difficult for people to return to their favorite places, and the site would then become too large and cumbersome to be meaningful. 4. The site could not even become a reality without a defined structure and the ability for site visitors to track their way through it, as it would just be an enormous repository for artifacts that people would be unable to navigate successfully. "Mobile Push: Delivering Content to Mobile Users." IEEE Computer Society. Each item with its user-chosen preference would be represented by a different row in the table, so the software would only have to find the row containing that item's preference value. The complexity involved in keeping a database of personal preferences depends in part upon the software it is developed in, but for all intents and purposes it can essentially be a relatively table-driven process. Internet technology would be useful for promoting the project and drawing non-locals to the site from around the world. It is important to create a content delivery channel for mobile and pervasive devises because so many people today use these to access the Internet. 5. Without Internet technology, the primary visitors would be those that lived nearby that could drive to the site, but through the Internet, anyone anywhere on the globe can visit it at any time, day or night, with no travel costs or travel time involved. 2 8. A GIS system is "an information system for geography...based on a structured database that describes the world in geographic terms" ("What Is GIS?). A GPS would provide the facility similar to that of the Eternal Egypt project to identify where each tourist is within the project's site and provide the appropriate information about that particular object. The three technologies that I would particularly engage if I were to implement a similar project for local tourism would be a geographic information system (GIS), Internet technology, and a global positioning system (GPS). As Podnar, Hauswirth, and Jazayeri (2 8) point out, the technology scene today is characterized by "The increasing popularity of information services that rely on content delivery in mobile environments." Many web sites have been redesigned to accommodate the mobile user, and for Eternal Egypt to refuse to do so would be to limit not only its access but also its wide appeal. Keeping a database of personal preferences such as bookmarks and favorite sites is critical to making the Eternal Egypt project both popular and a reality. 3. The use of Internet technology is particularly important for a project such as Eternal Egypt, because the ease of submitting exhibits and information is greatly facilitated by online access and because a much greater number of people can view the exhibits.
