In other words, ECcounties must compromise, sign a binding treaty, and uphold it. The only way that all of the countries of the EC can come together informing a common policy of immigration is if each is willing to concedesome aspect of its sovereignty concerning immigration. 445-458.The Economist. International Labor Review, Vol. Even while the removal of such barriers iswhy the EC was formed, the reality of the situation is that type of unitywhich would allow for a common policy is far in the future. In addition, such a system makestoo many broad assumptions regarding persecution in the countries on thelist and does not adequately address the status of countries that are noton the list. Immigration into Europe and public policy. Even while asylum was not granted to amajority of these people, they were given the benefit of the doubt andprotected until a tribunal evaluated their assertions of persecution. After 1993, Germany maintained the policy of protecting certain applicants;however, all applicants from a list of countries that Germany has deemed tobe safe are rejected without any further review. The extent of false asylum claims, however, may be leading ECcountries to adopt immigration policy measures that are unfruitful in thelong-term and seem punitive for people who are truly in need of asylum(Baldwin-Edwards, 1992). However, an implicit policyfor asylum already seems to be in place. As stated, however, currently there does seem to be a fairlyregularized EC attitude toward immigration. Furthermore, even if EC countries were able to reach an accord regarding legalimmigration, the problem of illegal immigration would need to be addressed.
